Modern Periodic Table: In 1912, Moseley proposed that the physical and chemical properties of the atoms of the elements are determined by their atomic number and not their atomic mass. Thus, the physical and chemical properties of the elements are periodic function of their atomic numbers. This is known as modern periodic law. Based on this law, the classification of elements is represented by a modern periodic table in which elements are arranged in the order of their increasing atomic number, It is observed that elements of similar, properties recur at regular intervals or periodically, and this repetition of similar properties of elements is termed as periodicity.
However, the most commonly used form is long form of the periodic table. It consists of horizontal rows called periods and vertical columns called groups.
